Category:Rap battle songsFOXBOROUGH, Mass. — In a year when everything at Gillette Stadium appeared to be running smoothly, and everything seemed to be going as planned, a series of events over the last several days made the Patriots' front office and coaching staff feel as if something was amiss.
First, the team lost the services of linebacker Jerod Mayo for the remainder of the season after he was placed on the injured reserve list Saturday.
On Sunday, a day before the Patriots began preparations for their Week 13 matchup with the Saints, second-year cornerback Brandon Browner was released after it was revealed that he failed a drug test last week.
And now, the Patriots traded for Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins, who will step into a starting safety role for the first time in his career.
"It's a good day," Brady said Sunday. "It's fun to get to know Malcolm. He's a fun guy to be around. I'm excited for him and for us to get to know each other."
Jenkins was selected by the Saints in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft, and has started four games this season. He is coming off a season in which he made 67 tackles and two interceptions.
The Patriots have been searching for a starting safety since the end of the 2013 season, when Devin McCourty signed a five-year, $47 million contract extension with New England. But McCourty is slated to be suspended the first four games of the 2014 season after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence.
After signing McCourty to the extension, the Patriots didn't have an immediate need at safety, which means they are taking a huge hit with the loss of Mayo and Browner. Mayo, who was second in the NFL with 120 tackles, missed a game earlier this season with a toe injury, and Browner's recent drug-related issue was the first time that he had been suspended by the NFL since he played college ball at Miami (Fla.) University.
